I Am Rotorua – Rauhina Martin

I Am Rotorua

“I didn’t grow up here, but my partner did. I have been here for three years, and I love that Rotorua is so enriched in Māori culture. Living in Rotorua is pretty special compared to other places. It has a slower, more relaxed pace of life, but there’s always something happening, whether it’s cultural events or outdoor activities. The strong sense of community really stands out, and being surrounded by nature all the time – the lakes, forests, and geothermal areas – makes everyday life feel connected to the land. Compared to bigger cities, it’s less hectic and more personal, but it still has everything you need. I’m also from a very small village, but town life is me, so Rotorua is perfect.

“In my opinion, the best part about the Rotorua community, the community that I surround myself with, is how genuinely supportive and welcoming they are. There’s a real sense of whānau here, people look out for one another, celebrate each other’s wins, and come together in times of need. Whether it’s at local events, markets, schools, or sports clubs, you can always feel the warmth and pride people have for their town and each other. It’s that strong sense of connection and belonging that makes Rotorua feel like home.

“Rotorua has had a significant impact on my journey as a business owner, not just in how I operate day to day, but in how I think about success overall. Being in a place so rich in culture, history, and community has completely shifted my outlook. I’ve come to understand success isn’t about numbers or growth; it’s about connection, purpose, and aligning your business with values that matter to the people around you.”
