Rotorua businesses back local women’s footy from the first whistle

There’s something pretty special brewing on the pitch at Lakes Football Club – and Rotorua locals are taking notice.

Just days out from one of their biggest matches yet, Lakes FC’s Senior Women’s teams have scored some amazing support from two proud Rotorua businesses. Polynesian Spa has signed on as the Primary Women’s Sponsor, while The Pet Vet Rotorua is backing the teams by sponsoring their warm-up kits.

That means when these wāhine take the field, they’re not just wearing new gear – they’re wearing the backing of a whole community.

“We’re backing this team from the first whistle,” says Dr Stacey Tremain from The Pet Vet. “Being on the warm-up kits is symbolic – it’s where the preparation happens, where the tone is set. We’re passionate about lifting women’s sport in Rotorua.”

And there’s plenty to cheer for. The W-League team is fresh off a thrilling second-round win in the Kate Sheppard Cup, New Zealand’s top women’s football knockout competition. Next up: a massive away match against West Coast Rangers, a side two divisions above them.

But Lakes FC isn’t just here to take part – they’re going up with purpose and pride.

“This weekend is huge for us,” says W-League captain Sammi Parish. “We’re not just going to make up the numbers. With the backing of our new sponsors and the spirit in this team, we’re heading up there with belief.”

For Polynesian Spa, the partnership was a no-brainer.

“We’re proud to support Lakes FC and their women’s teams,” says CEO Gert Taljaard. “Our values around wellbeing, excellence, and community are exactly what these players show every week.”

The sponsorships were unveiled at a special fundraising dinner hosted at Yamato Restaurant, where local support was strong and spirits were high.

Lakes FC has been putting serious energy into its women and girls’ programme – and it’s paying off. With two strong squads competing in regional leagues and a clear development pathway, the club is creating real opportunity for young talent in Rotorua.

President Nick Jensen summed it up best:

“These sponsorships represent a huge vote of confidence in our women’s programme. We’re incredibly grateful to Polynesian Spa and The Pet Vet Rotorua – they’re helping us shine a national spotlight on Rotorua football.”

And this Sunday, when the team steps onto the field up in Auckland, they won’t just be playing for themselves. They’ll be representing every coach, whānau member, teammate, sponsor, and local who’s been part of the journey.
